Katerina Andreou (GR/F)

BSTRD

performance, italian première

BSTRD is a solo performance based on the notions of impurity and hybridisation. Inspired by house culture’s practice of amalgamation, Katerina Andreou is interested on developing a physicality that can carefully serve the concept of pure impurity. With only a record player as her stage partner, she challenges the boundary between autonomy and authority, conditioning and free will. Once more she presents her own style with an energy which is as explosive as it is contained, with movements closely anchored to the ground. Her body is engraved in the very instant, inbetween the limits of effort and fatigue, exploring an imaginary geometry. She is interested in house music and dance – from New York and Chicago in the 1980s – as practices of métissage, developed by people of different origins and using different techniques, dancing together to the same music. Far from any idealization of purity, everything is nothing but an assemblage of diversities. Katerina Andreou embodies this hybrid music (the soundtrack has been conceived by herself and printed in vinyl) which uses samples allowing for incursions into varied fragments and a continuous bass line. Her dance is based on a choreographic structure punctuated by what she calls gestural ‘rendezvous’, as a result of training and freestyle (in opposition to notions as practice and improvisation). Bodily mechanisms and mental schemes that could break into the ascetic. ‘I need silence for this piece’.

Katerina Andreou, born in Athens, is based in France and makes dances, music and choreography. She graduated both from the Law School‑University of Athens, and the State School of Dance in Athens. As a scholar of the greek foundation K. Pratsika, she attended the program ESSAIS in CNDC d’Angers in 2011, under the direction of Emmanuelle Huyhn, and holds a master degree of Paris 8 on research and choreography. She was a Danceweb scholar in Impulstanz Festival in Vienna in 2015. As a dancer she collaborated among others with DD Dorvillier, Lenio Kaklea, Bryan Campbell, Dinis Machado, Emmanuelle Huynh, Ana Rita Teodoro, Anne Lise Le Gac, Jocely Cottencin, Iris Karayan. In her own work, she is interested in developing states of presence sorting out from a constant negotiation between contrasted tasks, fictions and universes, often questioning the paradigm authority-autonomy, communication and seeking an illusion of free will. She often makes the music design of her own pieces. She was awarded with the choreography price Prix Jardin d’Europe in ImpulsTanz Festival in 2016 for the solo A kind of fierce, and she has been nominated among the Aerowaves Twenty19 artists for her solo BSTRD. She is a Panorama Artist of the network Departures and Arrivals (DNA).
