FMAV – Palazzina dei Giardini – Modena

Geumhyung Jeong (KR)

Upgrade in Progress

solo exhibition and site-specific installation

The focus on Geumhyung Jeong extends from Bologna to Modena through the partnership between Live Arts Week and FMAV, expanding the gaze of an artist who questions the relationship between her body and technologies with a delicate obsession and strong sensuality.

Upgrade in Progress (FMAV – Fondazione Modena Arti Visive, 6 March > 2 June 2020) is the first solo exhibition of Geumhyung Jeong in Italy. The exhibition, which mixes sculpture, performance and video, presents a new site-specific installation with prosthetic devices, dummies, spare body parts, hardware tools and remote-controlled mechanical robots built by the artist. The sculptural machines, placed over modular worktables, transform the Palazzina’s halls into a total stage setting. The spatial layout, broken up by videos along the whole exhibition route has been used by Geumhyung Jeong during her period of residence as a studio-workshop where she performed tests and experiments on her ‘toys’. By transforming this hyper-technological environment through the simple power of creative imagination, Jeong’s exhibition reveals what lies beyond the deep materiality of the technological body: a cage needing to regain both mortal flesh and control, to which only the artist’s mind holds the key.

On Sunday 29 March Geumhyung Jeong will interact with the objects of her installation at the Palazzina dei Giardini with the action Live Demonstration tour.
